Abstract: This journal article reviews ethnobotanical and scientific evidence for the use of medicinal plants in Alzheimer's disease (AD). In orthodox Western medicine, pharmacological properties of traditional memory enhancing plants have not been widely investigated. An exception is Ginkgo biloba, for which evidence suggests that gingkolides may have antioxidant, neuroprotective, and cholinergic actions relevant to AD mechanisms. Old European references document a variety of other plants such as Sage and Balm with memory-improving properties, and cholinergic activities have recently been identified in extracts of these plants. The authors suggest that it may be appropriate to explore the historical archives for new directions in AD therapy. 3 tables, 55 references.
