Abstract: This book summarizes the contributions of M. Powell Lawton to research, practice, and policy in the field of physical environment and aging. Nine papers discuss the following topics: (1) the scholarly dilemmas that have characterized Lawton's career; (2) the philosophical foundations that guided Lawton's thinking and research; (3) Lawton's contributions to the built environment, with a focus on the major principles of environmental design and planning; (4) Lawton's meaning of community at the physical, personal, suprapersonal, and social environmental levels, and the implications for community planning; (5) Lawton's contributions to the design of long-term care facilities, including key environmental principles for residents with dementia; (6) Lawton's quality of life model and the therapeutic value of place-based reminiscence; (7) Lawton's contributions to theory and research on home modification; (8) the application of aging factors to interior design and product selection; and (9) the development and validation of the Housing-Related Control Beliefs Questionnaire.
