Abstract: This book is a guide to environmental design for assisted living. It includes design principles, case studies, hundreds of photographs and illustrations, and practical guidelines for housing the physically and mentally frail elderly. Part I presents the defining features of assisted living, a profile of assisted living facilities in the United States, and conceptual frameworks for evaluating the assisted living environment. Part II describes 100 critical design considerations for assisted living, including neighborhood and site issues, the outdoor landscape, creating a residential appearance, stimulating social interaction, extending independence, stimulating the senses, creating affect, engaging the staff, and planning for dementia. Part III presents case studies of assisted living communities throughout Europe and the US. Part IV discusses the lessons learned from European facilities, the 20 most important design considerations, 30 future trends in the assisted living industry, and concluding issues. Profiles of noteworthy European and US buildings and a glossary of housing terms are included at the end of the book.
