Abstract: This document highlights portions of a panel discussion on quality indicators and the management of dementia patients in nursing facilities. The discussion was held during an annual meeting of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists. Stephen M. Aronson, MD, reviewed the management of dementia patients, focusing on the use of conventional and atypical antipsychotics for behavioral symptoms and potential side effects of these drugs. Thomas J. Cali, PharmD, reviewed the four cholinesterase inhibitors that have been approved for the treatment of dementia: donepezil, galantamine, rivastigmine, and tacrine. He also discussed the role of the consultant pharmacist in the management of patients with dementia. Key quality indicators related to dementia are included in a chart.
