Abstract: This book is a guide to the use of psychotropic drugs with elderly patients. It covers a wide range of mental disorders encountered in the elderly, including Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, behavioral disturbances, anxiety, depression, mania and other mood disorders, and various forms and presentations of psychosis. Medical issues typically encountered in the elderly, disabilities associated with aging, and nursing home situations also are addressed throughout the text. The material is organized according to the major classes of psychotropic drugs: antidepressants, antipsychotics, anxiolytics and sedative/hypnotics, mood stabilizers, and cognitive enhancers. Each chapter includes general information about the drug class, such as clinical indications, pharmacology, side effects, and drug-drug interactions as well as detailed dispensing information for specific drugs. The material is presented mostly in outline and tabular formats, with a minimum of narrative. The book also has a drug profile chart with information about dosage forms, appearance, and cost; an extensive reference list; and an index.
