Abstract: This article presents a theoretical model for nursing research and practice on the use of touch intervention to alleviate stress in people with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Building on a base of empirical evidence from existing research, the authors synthesized information derived from two conceptual models: the Progressively Lowered Stress Threshold (PLST) model and the Touch model. The resulting theoretical model, the Touch-Stress model, provides a basis for the use of touch as non-verbal communication to minimize situational stress in patients with AD and decrease their emotional and behavioral disturbances. The model can contribute to theory development, improve the care of patients with AD, and increase the quality of life for caregivers and families. 2 figures, 35 figures.
