Abstract: This brochure suggests simple steps to make the home safe and supportive for an individual with Alzheimer’s disease. Before modifying the home, you should identify potential hazards, focus on adapting rather than teaching, simplify daily activities, and create an environment that supports the person’s needs. To make the home safer, you can lock or disguise hazardous areas, install locks out of sight, and use devices such as child-proof locks and door knobs. To accommodate visual changes, you can diffuse bright light, create an even level of lighting, use different colors, and install special lighting. To reduce the risk of injury from hazardous objects, you should restrict the use of potentially dangerous appliances, supervise smoking and alcohol consumption, keep the refrigerator safe, and keep walking areas clear. You can prevent injuries during daily activities by monitoring temperatures, preventing falls, and supervising medication use. You can create a supportive environment by encouraging independent movement, involving the person in activities, creating access to the outdoors, and being prepared for emergencies. The brochure includes a safety checklist with items for each room of the house and the outdoors.
