Abstract: This Continuing Medical Education (CME) activity is designed to update primary care physicians on the clinical management of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). It has three sections. The first section describes assessment tools that are commonly used to measure cognitive, behavioral, functional, and global outcomes in clinical trials, and discusses the implications for evaluating patients in a clinical practice. The second section discusses mild cognitive impairment as a possible preclinical condition for AD and examines the potential for early diagnosis and treatment to disrupt progression to more debilitating stages of the disease. The third section summarizes clinical trial data on therapies, including cholinesterase inhibitors and memantine for the treatment of moderate to severe AD and describes how the evidence-based study results may be interpreted for use in clinical practice. A CME post-test and activity evaluation form (good until June 30, 2006) is included.
