Abstract: This book presents guidelines for the humanistic design of assisted living facilities. The author translates research-based information into innovative and practical design strategies to make assisted living facilities more friendly, warm, and supportive for residents and their families. Part I discusses the evolution of the industry and describes resources that are available to guide the design of assisted living. Part II addresses the concept of humanistic design. It discusses the role of consumer input and presents a research-based conceptual framework composed of six themes: familiar housing cues, protective enclosure, caring cues, human scale, usability, and naturalness. Part III applies these themes to guidelines for building exteriors, interior entries, and common shared spaces. The recommendations are supported by photographs that demonstrate effective design strategies as well as some less-successful examples. The final chapter summarizes the design needs of older assisted living residents and families in relation to the conceptual framework for humanistic design. It also summarizes more than 90 specific design recommendations in tables that can serve as quick checklists for designers. Illustrations, references, index.
