Abstract: This newsletter article is designed to help family members plan home modifications for their aging loved ones. The first step is to make a list of helpful resources such as products or home contractors. The second step is to determine what modifications are needed. You can identify areas of need by observing the home environment and by asking the loved one about the kinds of things he or she is having difficulty doing at home. Finally, you can use the services of an occupational therapist. These professionals can provide an individualized assessment that matches the person’s physical and cognitive abilities to the features of the home environment. In addition, they can explain that the home, not the person, is the problem, which will make suggested changes more acceptable to the loved one. The article includes a home modification checklist with suggestions for the bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, and other areas in the home.
