Abstract: In this article, long term care professionals offer advice about design features that make caregiving and operations easier for residents with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia. For example, Bob Elmer at the Carriage House in Westerly, RI, reports that openness is the key to success. In his facility, staff can stand at one end of the building and see what is happening the other end. Kathleen O’Brien of the National Alzheimer’s Association in Chicago, IL, reports that small and more homelike environments, with personal items brought from home, are important for quality care. Susan Lanza at Llanfair House in Wayne, NJ, suggests making bathing rooms more homelike, providing a pleasant dining environment, using artwork to disguise doors, and creating a calming room for agitated residents. Emily Morgan at RehabWorks in Newtown, PA, suggests using walking paths and alcoves to promote social interaction among residents. Jenny Burton at Franklin United Methodist Community in Franklin, IN, focuses on bathroom features such as making sure the toilet paper is conveniently located and residents in wheelchairs can reach faucets and sinks. The article includes a list summarizing advice from the experts on programming and planning, architectural design, and interior design.
