Abstract: This handbook demonstrates how to make home modifications for aging in place with a developmental disability. Complete with photographs and diagrams, the book identifies potential problems areas and suggests solutions for all areas of the home, including: entryways, halls and stairways, living and dining rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms. While the modifications are generally suitable for people with any form of cognitive impairment, one chapter offers advice specifically for people in different stages of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. A home environment safety checklist is included to guide the assessment and modification of the home for safe and independent aging in place.
