Abstract: This guide for mental health professionals explores the experience of caregiving in dementia, discussing the latest research developments and sharing tips for clinical practice. Part I reviews the history of caregiving in dementia, definitions of terms, early assessment and intervention studies, and current research directions. Part II focuses on individual caregivers of persons with dementia, including who they are, what their problems are, and how they become caregivers. It describes the demographics of caregivers and care recipients, the tasks caregivers perform, and the economic outcomes of caregiving. It also provides an overview of the literature on caregiver burden and resiliency. Part III examines caregiving from an interpersonal perspective. It discusses the affective interpersonal bond in caregiving, the influence of religious participation by the caregiver and care recipient, caregiving and the sexual relationship in dementia, and grief and loss in dementia. Part IV draws clinical implications from the research on the individual and interpersonal aspects of caregiving. It outlines a biopsychosocial model addressing the mental health needs of the patient with dementia and the caregiver across formal and informal settings. It also explores pharmacological options for the treatment of behavioral disturbance, and discusses the roles of psychotherapy, family therapy, and social supports in dementia care. Part V examines societal issues of caregiving, including health care policies and their impact on caregiving, ethnic elders and their caregivers, and the ethics of dementia caregiving.
