Abstract: This package, consisting of a DVD and booklet, presents highlights of two innovative programs that were designed to use art and science as a way to inspire and inform the public about Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The New York event was hosted by the Alzheimer's Association, New York City Chapter and was held October 22-27, 2006 at the New York Academy of Medicine in New York City. Entitled “The Later Works of William Utermohlen 1995-2000,” it showcased a series of self-portraits by the artist Bill Utermohlen after he was diagnosed with AD in 1995. These portraits visually communicate the emotional, perceptual, and psychological journey of a man living with AD. The lecture event, entitled “Portraits and Promises in Alzheimer’s Disease,” brought together a group of leaders in the fields of AD, art, and advocacy. The lecture addressed the history of AD, the works of William Utermohlen, creativity in the context of neurologic illness, the current state of scientific research in AD, and support services for people living with AD. The exhibit and lecture events were held again in conjunction with the Alzheimer's Association International Conference on Prevention of Dementia, at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel, Washington, DC, June 9-12, 2007.
