Abstract: The Electronic Dementia Guide for Excellence (EDGE) is an Internet-based education program that uses person-centered care principles to improve the quality of care and life of persons with dementia in nursing homes and other settings. It is designed to be user-friendly, reflect research based state-of-the art techniques and care practices, and provide interventions for residents throughout the functional phases of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. The program is based on the BASICS Hierarchy of Resident Needs in long-term care. It uses BASICS to look at a resident’s problems and strengths, using this information to assess needs and plan interventions on each level of need. EDGE also provides interventions such as Tea Group, Big Band, Worship Services, Gentle Bathing, Breakfast Club, and other activities. Each intervention includes sections on the purpose, goals and benefits, structure and format, troubleshooting, outcomes, references, and forms. The website also has an article (downloadable as PDF) that describes the process of developing, testing, and adapting the EDGE program in various care settings.
