Abstract: In this book, Gertrude Payton shares the experiences she had with her husband, Mack, who had vascular dementia. They met at college, when Mack returned from World War II where he served as a corporal in the United States Marine Corps. Gertrude and Mack were married a year later, fifty-nine years and five months before his death. Their journey with dementia began after 33 years of marriage. In 1981, Mack had an angina attack that led to heart bypass surgery. In 2002, he had a mini-stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). He died in February of 2007. In Part I of this book, Gertrude describes her personal struggles, emotional stress, and the understanding she needed to care for a loved one with dementia. Part II, the Survival Strategies section, includes methods she developed and used to understand, work through, and cope with her responsibilities as a caregiver. These include visions of her role as a caregiver, and Mack’s role as a care receiver expressed in poems, as well as practical tips for caring for a loved one and for oneself.
