Abstract: This White Paper is from the Center on Age & Community’s May 2009 Think Tank, “How Can We Radically Transform Activities in Long Term Care?” The Think Tank involved 30 experts in the arts, aging services, and family caregiving who came together to explore how to bring meaningful engagement to long term care, whether people live in their own homes or in institutions. Participants addressed how the conceptual and community-building work in the arts might benefit the world of aging, how the practical knowledge of those in the field of aging might inform the ideas of artists, how to engage older adults despite their physical or cognitive impairments, and what caregivers and older adults themselves have to say about “activities.” This paper presents the goals for the Think Tank, the questions that were posed, and responses to those questions. It also highlights thoughts that emerged from the public forum, focus groups, and breakout projects. Participants in these events developed ideas for “enchanting” common activities (making them more meaningful by adding a layer of mystery and wonder), identified obstacles to transforming activities in long-term care, and suggested strategies to overcome those obstacles.
