Abstract: “Connections” is a complete activities guide for people diagnosed with dementia. It is designed to help caregivers structure the day and modify the environment to offer the person with dementia opportunities to engage in meaningful activities. “Connections” draws on principles from three practice fields: therapeutic recreation, Montessori-based dementia programming, and cognitive intervention approaches. It emphasizes the importance of matching activities to the abilities and interests of the individual. Chapter 1 outlines the basics of understanding dementia and provides tools for assessing a person’s leisure interests. Chapter 2 contains a checklist and form for determining the individual’s approximate level of activity independence. The results are used to design an individualized activity program. The different levels of function are identified by color and used to select appropriate activities in the color-coded program guide in Chapter 3. An appendix contains a home safety checklist, tips for maintaining independence, and a list of additional resources.
